thank you, Sushi Land

I don't often crave sushi, but when I eat it, I'm always glad for doing so.

After hearing just about everyone I know talk about Sushi Land, I finally tried it out. I was happy to have a friend with me who knew a little more about sushi than me, so I could ask questions, even though I'm not the most adventurous sushi eater. We sat at the bar and got to watch everything being made. Most of the plates going out were visually stunning, with the contrast of white sticky rice meeting alternating pieces of orange salmon and pink tuna (check out the website and look at the "rolls" section for pictures of the Halloween roll or the cherry blossom to see what I mean).

I got the spicy tuna roll (fresh tuna, cucumber and spicy sauce) and the Philly roll (salmon, cream cheese, avocado, tobiko), though I snagged a piece of my friend's crunch roll (pictured above and made up of shrimp, cucumber, spicy sauce and "crunch"... yes, you read right. I quoted the menu) and that was certainly the winner.

Jamaican me crazy

Pardon my corniness--it's just something you'll have to get used to I'm afraid.

Last weekend, my dear friend Chelsea celebrated a landmark birthday and decided to celebrate with friends [myself included] at the Jamaican Jerk Hut. Back in my cubicle days, I worked down the street from a great Jamaican restaurant, so I was eager to revisit the delicious island flavors I savored on my lunch breaks.

I opted for the Jerk Chicken Breast Quarter Platter at $13 and a side of coco bread, which I split with friends. Before our meal arrived, our server brought out bowls of tropical fruit salsa and tortilla chips. The salsa was an interesting blend of pineapple and hot peppers, creating surprising bites which alternated between sweet, tangy and hot flavors.

I should mention that we were seated outside in the side yard and the weather was absolutely lovely. We enjoyed chips & fruit salsa, wine (did I mention it's BYOB? a small corking fee applies) and conversation. The atmosphere is totally relaxed and perfect for a summer meal with friends where you can stretch your legs and laugh loudly without worrying about getting strange looks from the person at the table six inches away from you. Apparently the restaurant was featured in the movie In Her Shoes, though I haven't seen it, so I can't be 100% sure.

Our meals arrived shortly and I could not wait to try my food.
(pictured above: fried plantains and Jamaican cabbage that was buttery sweet and easily the best part of the meal. pictured below: rice and peas (my second favorite part of the meal--perfectly balanced flavor, mild yet definitely a comfort food) and the star of the show, chicken breast cured in a spicy blend of jerk seasoning and then grilled over hardwood charcoal)

If you find yourself near South Street surrounded by a group of hungry friends, be sure to check out the Jamaican Jerk Hut for a relaxed atmosphere, modest prices and casual ethnic dining!
